09/10/2024Oslo Afro-Funk Seven-Piece Flammer Dance Band Returns With A Blazing Six-Track LP Of Incendiary Groovers On Lyskestrekk

With temperatures on a decline in the northern hemisphere, we turn to Norway of all places where the Flammer Dance Band has been steadily blazing its very own trail to glory. The certified off-their-rocker, Oslo-based collective lit a spark with its 2020-released 7" "Mer/Holder Rytme" and we made sure to include the B-Side in our monthly Spotify selection of extraordinary tracks from around the globe back in November 2021 – better late than never. Following their self-titled, somewhat under-the-radar debut five-tracker "Flammer", the group dropped its whopping eleven-track LP "Dedikasjon Til Inspirasjon" in 2023 (this time, we were quicker to pull the trigger and include the track "Samosa" in our playlist), proving that they lacked neither dedication nor inspiration. Now, hot on the heels of a year on the road, "which included a two-week stint as the backing band for Ghanaian legend Funky Rob," the Flammer Dance Band presents its latest chef d'oeuvre of high-octane afro-funk groovers.

"Gynger" brings us another six funk-laden tracks by the seven-piece recorded in a "hot and sweaty soul shack" over the course of five days. The new longplayer perfectly "captures the raw, dynamic spirit of [the outfit's] well-oiled, psychedelic funk machine," drawing from a yet-to-be-revealed, seemingly infinite source of energy and ingenuity. Marked by infectious spontaneity, each composition kicks off on a certified funky lick and then evolves down a narrow winding road of inherent musical intuition and able improvisation: living on the edge, but miraculously staying the course. Featuring breakneck rhythms, poignant synth stabs and sax lines along with regular vocal interjections adding fuel to the unrelenting fire, this latest offering is bound to firmly establish the Flammer Dance Band on the global circuit and should translate to an equally scintillating live presentation.

That being said, we strongly suggest you don't sleep on this electrifying ensemble of tight-knit funk aficionados putting the Scandinavian Peninsula on the afro-funk heatmap once and for all. You can stream the full album below and watch the official DIY companion video to "Trenger Ikke Dra" while you're at it. We didn't start the fire...
