Fruta Madura

02/08/2024Alex Figuiera's Conjunto Papa Upa Unveils Sophomore Album Of Visionary Tropical Soundscapes On Music With Soul

Rumour has it, he is one of the busiest men in tropical music and has the discography to show for it. And then there's that presumably massive record collection of his that should serve as an abundant source of inspiration during the occasional dry spell. Alex Figueira, the one-man-band and mastermind behind the Music With Soul and Vintage Voudou imprints – also involved with band's such as Fumaça Preta and Lola's Dice – recently resurfaced wielding the sophomore album of his Conjunto Papa Upa six-piece (the follow-up to the project's 2020-released debut "Libre Para Amar"). Titled "Fruta Madura" ('Ripe Fruit'), this novel ten-track voyage into potential tropical futures is indeed a thoroughly entertaining and well-rounded affair.

After recently covering the latest full-length release of Eblis Álvarez' Meridian Brothers (read more here), we felt "Fruta Madura" would nicely complement our short excurse into the 'tropicalatin' hemisphere. After all, Álvarez himself had this to say about Figueira and the new LP: "Alex dove into this work with a brutal cohesion between lyrics and synths. Timbre poetry, sound poetry (you name it). And that, superimposed on his always impeccable percussive base, confirms the title of 'avant-garde visionary of our beautiful Latin music.'" Following on the heels of his delirious, 2023 debut solo full-length "Mentallogenic" (read more here), Figueira rejoins the ranks of Conjunto Papa Upa to knock another afro-Carribean-inspired curveball right out of the park.

Similar to a 'ripe fruit', the musical tastes have really come together on this one and are bound to get your juices flowing. Like its predecessor, "Fruta Madura" pushes the boundaries in terms of the left-field, unorthodox and at times totally off-the-wall arrangements. Characterized by catchy, upbeat and leisurely arrangements and led by futuristic synth lines, a regiment of percussive elements and charismatically gushing vocals, the ten tracks on this latest Figueira oeuvre, however, are all airplay material. Despite their avant-garde intent and flamboyant build, the music on this 'future classic' is easily consumed and will leave you yearning for more. There are sudden bursts of nostalgia mixed in with all the innovative bits and pieces, reminding us of those who came before and helped pave the way. But the overall experience here is holidays on wax, the definitive soundtrack to sunnier days that no one expected you to be carrying in your bag or simply a stand-out contemporary tropicalatin record to boost your mood and anchor your collection of 21st century psychedelic grooves.
