Coxsone's Music

10/11/2015Soul Jazz Records Release Compilation of Groundbreaking Jamaican Recordings

London-based record label, record store, sound system, book publisher and radio broadcaster Soul Jazz Records has been digging up and re-releasing rare gems from a dizzying array of genres for the past 15 years. So if you are looking for rare grooves, obscure finds and superb re-issues, you now know, who to turn to.

Releasing this Friday, November 13th, is "Coxsone's Music", the label's stunning new, over two and a half hour collection of proto-ska, rhythm and blues, jazz, rastafari and gospel music by the legendary Jamaican producer Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd (before he launched Studio One Records), featuring local talents the likes of Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Derrick Harriott, Owen Gray, Clancy Eccles, Count Ossie, Monty Alexander, The Blues Busters, Ernest Ranglin, Rico Rodriguez and many more, captured in their formative early years from 1960-1963.

While Clement Dodd himself passed away back in 2004 at the age of 72, his Downbeat Soundsystem dominated Kingston’s dancehalls in the 1960s with music clearly reflecting American influences on the culture at the time. You can sample all 46 tracks from the Soul Jazz Records release page.
