Even in its 110th year radio remains a powerful communication tool, one that continues to reach the widest audience of all. Back in 2012, the UNESCO declared February 13th World Radio Day (WRD), celebrating the medium as "a platform for democratic discourse" and "an arena for all voices to speak out and be represented and heard." This year's edition focusses on three main sub-themes, being evolution, innovation and connection.
It is on this occasion that Weltbeat selector and radio host Jean Trouillet put together a specisal one-hour edition of his regular far-reaching format (est. 1997), showcasing 'innovation' from different angles. The "Globalwize X UNESCO #WRD special" features extraordinary works by Mauro Durante's Lecce-based Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi from his "Taranta Project", the also Lecce-based dub project Insintesi (aka Francesco Andriani de Vito & Alessandro Lorusso), Salento's Opa Cupa, Dutch composer Colin Benders' multi-faceted Kyteman Orchestra, French-Lebanese trumpeter/composer Ibrahim Maalouf and the Balkan brass of Paris-based Haïdouti Orkestar, France's Féloche, Turkish oriental dub outfit BaBaZuLa, French electronic two-piece DuOuD and Mauritanian singer Malouma, Ian Balzan Dorizas and his Greek revival sounds, krautrock pioneer Holger Czukay and, finally, Danish sample champs Den Sorte Skole.
