We return with a new edition of WeltBeat host and selector Jean Trouillet's regular, far-reaching Globalwize format on Frankfurt's radio X. This latest episode is a new 'African Presence' special focussing on the history of African music, presented by Trouillet alongside Dr. Hauke Dorsch, director of the African Music Archives at the University of Mainz. While a majority of the show features Trouillet and Dorsch dropping knowledge and providing some necessary context, there are also a few exemplary tracks included, which deserve a special mention.
The "Globalwize Radioshow #454" includes music by Mali's Baba Sangare of R.T.M., taken from the "Under African Skies" various artists compilation accompanying the BBC TV mini series of the same name, Spanish flamenco fusion outfit Ketama playing with the very recently deceased Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté and UK jazz bassist Danny Thompson, the late Gambian jali (praise singer) and kora player Alhaji Bai Konte, the late Guinean singer Sory Kandia Kouyaté nicknamed 'the voice of Africa', Senegal's Cheick Niang Guitariste, the legendary Guinean music group Bembeya Jazz National and, last but not least, the one and only Miriam Makeba.
