It's time for another episode of Globalwize (Weltbeat / Radio X) on Greedio, episode #380 to be exact. Selector and presenter Jean Trouillet makes his return to our Mixcloud channel with another deep and eclectic dive into global soundscapes.
His latest two-hour exploit features a wide array of tunes to widen your musical horizon, kicking off with Mali's young and sensational Star Feminine Band, an all-female project recently released on Born Bad Records. Then it's off to Mexico for some unlikely Balkan vibes by Los Rurales, followed by the delightful and innovative musical partnership of Nataša Mirković (vocals), Michel Godard (serpent), Luciano Biondini (accordion) and Jarrod Cagwin (percussion) as well as a vocal-led track from Portugal by Cristina Branco. Moving on to Finland we encounter an ensemble named Áššu (who base their arrangements on traditional Sámi joik) as well as the revamped folk sounds of Pauanne. Next, it's the wonderful Israeli/Iranian singer Liraz with a track off her latest Glitterbeat-released album "Zan" ("Women"), paired with two saz-driven Anatolian tracks by Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek and leading up to the mindboggling "Azerbaijani Gitara" sounds of the late Rüstəm Quliyev. The second half of the show brings us more experimental sounds from Tehran by Hooshyar Khayam and Bamdad Afshar, the enriching intercultural dialogue of Derya Türkan (Turkey) and Sokratis Sinopoulos (Greece), Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 3" and the classical reinterpretations of Germany's Lautten Compagney. The show's last 30 minutes up the pace, beginning with two tracks off the latest collaborative effort by Haitian roots band Chouk Bwa and Belgian duo The Ångströmers, a remix of Malian singer-songwriter Idrissa Soumaoro by none other than Mike D of the legendary Beastie Boys, Mali's Orchestre Régional de Ségou and, in closing, two tunes from the spellbinding Omniversal Earkestra and their recently released "Le Mali 70" project, a serious contender for 'album of the year' in our books.
Still with us? Then go ahead and hit play.
